Parliament Demands Clarity on UCE Grading System Amidst Widespread Confusion

The Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has directed the Ministry of Education and Sports to prepare a comprehensive report on the grading system used for the 2024 Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) results.

This directive comes after lawmakers raised concerns about the confusion surrounding the new grading system, which was introduced with the release of the UCE results on Tuesday.

According to Kalungu West MP and Shadow Minister for Education, Joseph Ssewungu, parents, teachers, and students are struggling to understand the new grading system.

"Despite appreciating the new curriculum, the new grading system is likely to undermine students and schools who put in extra effort," Ssewungu said.

Lawmakers also revealed that some schools are misleading parents and students by claiming that students who received "Result One" are actually those who achieved the first grade. "This is unfortunate and needs to be addressed," Ssewungu added.

Efforts by State Minister for Education, Dr. Joyce Kaducu, to explain the new grading system only added to the confusion, prompting Speaker Among to request a comprehensive report from the ministry.

"We need clarity on this matter, and we need it now," Among emphasized. "The ministry must provide a detailed report on the grading system, and we will debate it in the House."
